On Monday I posted a peek at the hand towel aprons I’ve been making. Before I give you the how to, I want to tell you I am not a sewer, so I’m sure there are better ways of doing all this. HA! With that, It was pretty easy to make, so don’t be worried if you can’t sew. If I can do it, you can do it!
Here is the final product…cute huh!
What you need:
Hand Towel (16x28)
1.5 yards of coordinating fabric for 1st ruffle
1.5 yards of coordinating fabric for 2nd ruffle
1 yard of coordinating fabric for tie
Thread in coordinating colors to fabric
Push pins
Scissors
Iron
Sewing machine
How to:
For the ruffles: Lay out your 1.5 yard of fabric and cut in half lengthwise (long ways)
Fold one piece of the cut fabric in half (right sides together)
Pin along the 3 raw edges
Sew the fabric together on the 3 raw edges. On one of the “short sides”, only sew it ¾ closed, so you will have room to turn the fabric right side out. (you don’t need to sew the edge that is folded)
Turn the fabric right side out, using the small hole you left on the short side.
Press your fabric (don’t skip this step, it looks so nice when you press it!)
Find the center of your fabric and place a push pin.
Take your tread and measure out the length of your hand towel leaving a little extra. Now double that and place your needle noting at the end. Hand sew a long stitch 1/2 inch from the top of your panel the length of your fabric (long ways).
You’re fabric will start to gather giving you a ruffle look.
Pin your gathered ruffle to your hand towel and sew your ruffle to the towel.
Repeat these same steps for your 2nd ruffle. I made my second ruffle smaller then the 1st. If you’d like to do the same, follow the steps below, so your 2nd ruffle is half the size of the 1st.
Lay out your 1.5 yard of fabric and cut in half lengthwise (long ways)
Now, take that piece and cut it in half AGAIN
Fold one piece of the cut fabric in half (right sides together)
For the tie: Like before Lay out your 1 yard of fabric and cut in half lengthwise (long ways). Now, take that piece and cut it in half AGAIN (to create 2 pieces for your tie). Press your fabric ½ inch on the 2 long edges of your fabric, this is shortcut so you want have to sew the edges down to create a finished edge.
Sew your 2 pieces together along the short edge (right sides together) to create a really long tie
Use your fabric as a binding for your hand towel. Slip your hand towel (like above) and pin in place.
Start at one end of you tie, sew the tie together, and continue the length of the hand towel all the way to the other end of the tie.
All finished!!
just for fun I made matching aprons for Little Miss and I!
